Simple Step : Convert GUI to Server Core in Windows Server 2012 R2 (Option 2)

Previously, early July 2014,  i blog about how to convert Windows Server 2012 R2 to Server Core.

This time lets try options 2, which is Convert Windows Server 2012 R2 GUI to Server Core and back to GUI… sound interesting?? lets try…

1 – On the GUI Server (GUI-Core-GUI), Open Server Manager, Click Manage and then click Remove Roles and features…



2 – On the Before you begin interface, click Next


3 – On the Select destination server interface, Click Next


4 – On the Remove server roles interface, click Next


5 – On the Remove features interface, browse to User Interfaces and Infrastructure and then un-tick Graphical Management Tools and Infrastructure and Server Graphical Shell, and then click Next



6 – On the Confirm removal selections, Click Remove… and restart your Server…


7 – Wait until the removal process completed…


8 – Wait until your Server restart…


9 – Log in to the Server, and Server Core cmd interface is ready for you…


10 – On the cmd interface, type powershell.exe and Enter…


11 – Don’t forget to insert / mount your Windows Server 2012 R2 installer, then in the Powershell interface type…

Get-WindowsImage -ImagePath D:\sources\install.wim

** Take note on the Index number, in my case, i will choose Index no.2 which is Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard edition to be convert to GUI…


12 – Next, type :

Install-WindowsFeature Server-GUI-Mgmt-Infra, Server-GUI-Shell -Restart –Source wim:D:\sources\install.wim:2


13 – If everything ok, your Server Core will automatically restart…


14 – After couple of minutes, you will get back your GUI interface…
