Simple Step : Convert GUI to Server Core in Windows Server 2012 R2 (Option 1)

July 3, 2014

Windows Server 2012 R2 having 2 types of installation, Server Core Installation & Server With a GUI.

One of my favorites new features in Windows Server 2012 R2 is the ability to convert a full installation GUI to a Server Core Installation and vice versa.

To convert a full installation GUI to a Server Core installation, just remove these two features in Server Manager.

Note that removing the first feature will automatically remove the second.

Lest get started.

1 – For this demo, i will be using my OSI-SVRCORE server which is still having Full Installation GUI of Windows Server 2012 R2.

— Open Server Manager, then click Manage then click Remove Roles & Features.

1

2 – click few times of Next button till you reach to Remove features box and browse to User Interfaces and Infrastructure, then un-tick Graphical Management Tools and Infrastructure

2

3 – Next, click Restart the destination server automatically if required then click Remove button, wait till your GUI Server restarted.

3

4 – After your Server successfully restarted, log in and you will get cmd interface as your defaults interface.

— you can start to configure your Server Core now by typing sconfig

4

5 – once you get your sconfig menu, you can now start configure the server core…
